The school’s tennis team recently begun their 2018 spring season following a  memorable fall season.

“Our season this year has been very good,” head coach Samuel Rodriguez said. “Players are encouraged continuously to challenge themselves as well as their teammates to become the best players they can possible be.”

The team is currently preparing for tournaments against Marcus High School on Feb. 7 and Prosper on Feb. 13.

“The team works really well together,” sophomore Sanjana Petluru said. “We’re improving with each tournament and every match we’re doing better and better.”

Tennis has two seasons, fall and spring. Last season, the team made it to playoffs, even placing third in the district tournament. Now, the players are focusing on individual matches for the spring season.

“We just started spring season and we played a couple tournaments,” junior and co-captain of the tennis team, Chloe Dix said. “I play singles and I placed second in both. Everyone’s doing pretty well. We’re placing a lot in different areas.”

The parents, coaches, and fellow team members can often be seen at their games as a way of motivating the players.

“My dad is the most supportive,” Dix said. “He takes me to all my outside of school tennis tournaments and a lot of them are really far. Last weekend, he drove me to Austin for a tournament which was a three hour long drive.”

Coach Rodriguez believes “tennis is like a rollercoaster” because players experience both high and low points allowing them to hone their skills.

“It’s just fun to be surrounded by so many people who have similar goals as you,” Dix said. “Tennis lets you make good friendships. If we have the same class as a team member, we can help each other out.”
