Nine Reedy artists attended the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) in San Marcos April 28 after advancing at regional competition.

96 students competed in the preliminary Region VASE competition at Prosper High School and 94 works of art received the highest rating of a four.

“They’re initially judged on creative expression, technical skills, the concept of the piece, and also on their interview,” art teacher Kathleen Schrantz said. “The judges want to know how well they can articulate what they did and the meaning behind their work.”

When students are being given a score for their piece, judges try to be as objective as possible, but things change a bit when it comes to choosing pieces that will advance.

“When they decide which ones are going to state, they choose from all of the pieces that scored a four,” Mrs. Schrantz said. “From there it’s kind of a popular voting. They vote with post-its and the ones with the most go to state.”

Out of all the pieces that were submitted by Reedy students, only ten pieces and nine artists moved on tostate competition.

“We had the second highest amount of students in Frisco go to State VASE,” art teacher Katie Gallimore said. “Independence has like 23 pieces and we had 10. I think the highest after that is nine or eight.”

Sophomore Yunbeen Bae made it into state last year and is going back this year with two pieces.

“Making it to state does mean a lot,” Bae said. “It means that I’m still improving because my division has gone up.”

The majority of students didn’t continue onto state, however VASE is a hard competition to advance to.

“There are always a few pieces every year that I think should go but don’t,” Ms. Schrantz said. “It’s just because I’m biased and see all the work that goes into them.”
