With football season here and basketball season approaching, a sport that seems all to often overlooked is golf. “A lot of people think that golf isn’t a sport,” captain of the varsity girls golf team Cassidy Wisneski said. This is a statement far from the truth especially when it comes to Reedy’s varsity girls golf team. Through their determination and resilience, they’ve proven that golf is so much more than just a sport.

“What most people don’t understand is that golf isn’t only a physical sport, but a mental one too, and that can be exhausting” Wineski said.

Wisneski adds that “tournaments are usually around four hours,” which is one challenge that presents itself to the girls.

“The hardest thing about playing, in general, is keeping a positive mindset,” varsity player Danielle Peterson said. “Skill that is definitely needed is patience. You also need to be able to uplift your teammates so they don’t feel down while they’re playing.”

Although there are challenges in golf, like having to use and balance both mental and physical skills, the advantages for the future after high school and college outweigh those struggles.

“Golf is just a really good sport to be able to play because it helps you a lot in the future with business deals,” varsity player Emaan Moon said. “It’s really good for scholarships as well.”

The varsity girls golf team travels to tournaments through the North Texas region. In this, they meet new players from various high schools and prepare as a team to take home a win.

“Our team is full of girls who work together to make Reedy Golf a better team,” varsity player Kennedy Smith said. “We like to get closer as a team outside of school and just try to be the best players possible on the golf course.”

Although the girls broke many records in the 2017 season, they’ve also used their skills to help the community too.

“One thing that I have accomplished that really stood out in my golf career was probably the hole-in-one that I made at the pink out tournament last year,” varsity player Nía Knights said. “It’s really rare to get a hole-in-one, one in 40,000. Not only is this an accomplishment, but it also donated $2,500 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.”
