Fashion trends are a continuous come and go, low rise jeans in the 2000s to the extremely plucked eyebrows of the grunge 90s. But when it comes to the 2010s, generation Z likes to pick out the retro styles of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Right now students are on the hunt to find their style, picking and choosing out from the newest trends of 2018-19. High school style is at some points, a complete mess. Nothing is cohesive, and no two students are dressed the same. Dissecting the fashion choices at Reedy High school is very interesting, especially since society is currently going through a fashion cycle and reaching the end point of it.
Now social media plays a significant role in teenage fashion trends, particularly with the new brand of “quirky” youtubers. Influencers like Emma Chamberlain, Marla Catherine, Olivia Rouyre all have a similar fashion aesthetic, known as the “Indie trend”. It’s called the Indie Trend because it’s exactly like the music genre. It’s thought to be original and creative, when in fact it’s the same style from the early 90s. Pieces like checkered vans, chains on jeans, and extremely baggy jeans with a tight crop top seem to be the main theme of high school girls and boys. Doc Martens is another trend being brought back generation Z, which can easily be paired with a plaid skirt and crop top.
For the boys style, it tends to lean towards the newest craze of hypebeast and the fad of being “rich”. Brands like Off-White and Balenciaga have catered to this trend, like the Industrial belt and the sock shoes. Not to mention the ugly sneaker trend, branded ugly because of it’s chunky shape at the sole of the shoe. Fila is a good example of the ugly sneaker trend, it’s clean and white but overall the shoe is thick in the fabric that’s used. Many high schoolers are to be seen wearing this specific type of shoe because of how big the trend is in street wear. Street wear is primarily where most of these trends come from. The everyday outfit worn by celebrities can be very appealing to the public, especially if people can find knock-offs or from fast fashion brands.
Finally, dying your hair pure black is currently the biggest trend in hair. Blonde has been kicked to the curb and black hair has risen supreme. For the origin of this trend, it could be either from the previous social media models on Instagram who started the “Indie Trend” or it could just be, again, from the resurfacing of the 90s looks. No matter the origin, the trend has hit the high school in full force.
