Following a successful season and postseason, both the Girls and Boys cross country (XC) teams are sending runners to the tournament. Athletes, coaches, and students alike are excited to see Reedy represented at UIL State this November.
“We’re going to state this year,” senior Daniel Escribano said. ”So it’s pretty good, it’s a pretty good feeling. I’m proud of us, and really excited too.”
This year, the entire Girls’ XC team ran for Regionals and now State—making UIL State even more exciting!
“I’m super excited for state because this is only the second time in Reedy history that the entire Girls’ team actually qualified for state,” senior Vanesa Gonzalez-Rodiles said. “So it’s really fun because I can actually run at the State meet with the team.”
Between meets and practices, balancing schoolwork, social life, and sleep can be very difficult; but many athletes have created methods as to how to balance their sport with their schoolwork and health.
“It’s pretty hard to balance everything with cross country because it takes up a lot of your time––I have work and a lot of homework which is super tiring,” senior Manny Mercado said. “Creating a schedule based off what I know I have helps me to plan out what I need to do”
The XC team works hard to foster an inclusive and enjoyable environment that focuses on attitude, effort, and coachability.
“Honestly, it’s all about one thing that we as coaches like to promote more than anything is just attitude, effort, and coachability,” Coach Breeden said. “Those are the things that the kids can control every single day.”
Being together on buses and at practices and meets means that the team has to spend a lot of time together––which has allowed the XC team to grow a close bond.
“I really like the team,” Rodiles said. “You run for 20 minutes and then you’re just having fun with your friends and cheering on everyone. It’s very together, we’re all really close and we all just want the best for one another.”
