September 16, is an exciting day for many Reedy students as the popular TV show, “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” is finally airing its series finale. Fans have been waiting for this episode since the start of the summer.
TSITP is a coming of age TV series following the life of Isabel Conklin, nicknamed Belly. From seasons one to three, Belly finds herself in a love triangle with two of her close childhood friends, Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher. Over the summer, many Reedy students said they spent their free time watching this plot unfold.
“I watched it this summer because I saw a lot of TikToks about it and I really liked the summer vibe,” senior Jaehui Hur said.
However for many viewers, TSITP is more than just a light hearted summer TV show, it is a topic of both debate and division. Most fans label themselves as either “Team Jeremiah” or “Team Conrad,” depending on who they think is the best fit for Belly.
“I’m Team Conrad,” senior Siena Jacob said. “I think he’s just more mature than Jeremiah.”
Despite the loyalty that many fans have to their team, some viewers have decided to change their stance after the most recent episodes.
“I was Team Jeremiah because he’s better looking,” sophomore Harmoni Davis said. “But now I’m Team Conrad because I value personality over looks.”
Some students also feel that the division caused by the show is part of the reason why it has become so popular. It seems that everyone wants to be a part of the conversation.
“The concept of picking sides gets people talking about the show,” Hur said. “Even the guys in my research class were talking about what team they are.”
In addition to the discussions and divide, people are drawn to the show as it reflects the personal experiences of most teenage girls.
“I relate to Belly’s emotions and stress,” Davis said. “As a teen, there’s times where you don’t know how to handle your emotions the correct way.”
Consisting of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Charli XCX songs, the sound track of TSITP further resonates with the emotions and music tastes of teenagers.
“The show has a lot of popular music,” Jacob said. “I think this helps people enjoy the series and relate to the scenes.”
Due to its social media presence, relatability, and catchy music TSITP is one of the most popular shows among Reedy students. Many fans are gearing up for the series finale tomorrow by predicting how the show will end.
“I think she’s gonna choose Conrad,” sophomore Saee Khankhoje said. “I hope she does!”
