Unexpected Journey

Shawn Platt, a physics and environmental science teacher, is new to the school this year. He has been teaching for 18 years, but when he was younger, teaching was not what he planned to do.
“At first I started out as an environmental consultant, but I didn’t like it very much,” Platt said. “My mom was a teacher at my school so I was always surrounded by the idea of it, so when I was called by my high school for a job interview I knew it was what I wanted to do.”
Growing up in a small town Platt dreamed of going to a large Texas school.
“ I went to A&M in college station,” Platt said. “I loved the traditions and family-style setting throughout the campus.”
While he wasn’t always sure he wanted to be a teacher, Mr. Platt knew he wanted to do something involving science.
“Environmental science is my absolute passion; my degree is in ecology,” Platt said. “I also like to teach physics because you can prove it with math and it explains how the world works, something I think will benefit students in the real world.”
Reedy is a unique school in multiple ways, but that uniqueness not only affect its students, but also the teachers who work here.
“I love teaching at Reedy because the students are so polite, and they care about learning,” Platt said. “They all want to succeed and they try their best every day in my class.”
Mr. Platt loves the outdoors and being surrounded by the beauty of nature. When he’s not teaching, he enjoys going on adventures with his family.
“Typically I spend my summers traveling with my wife and daughter, Laney,” Platt said. “I really enjoy going to Colorado, getting to unplug, and just spending quality time with my family.”
Something that many of his students would be surprised to know about him is that he know how to dance.
“I’ve danced onstage with my wife at grand balls and dance recitals,” Platt said. “She is the dance director here, so I travel with her a lot when she goes off to workshops and summer camps.”
Mrs. Platt has worked at Reedy since its opening and is a dance teacher as well as the drill team director. The couple met in middle school and have been together ever since.
“Working at the same school as Kristy and teaching in the same district as my daughter is amazing,” Platt said. “We have worked at the same school before, and it just makes life easier and more enjoyable when we’re around each other.”
