Reedy Choir: A Group like No Other

Since possibly the beginning of time, music has been part of everyone’s lives. From humming to a song on the radio, to dancing in the bedroom, to performing in front of an audience, music is around us. It’s even a big deal in schools, with many fine arts courses revolving around it, one of them being choir. This course is the same others, such as band or orchestra except for one big detail; there are no instruments; the members of choir do it all from singing.

Choir goes through annual competitions and events. Students who take choir are also in different electives of their choosing, and although a new thing, Reedy Choir has big plans for the future.

“Music is everything,” Mrs. Franklin, the choir director, said. “It’s mathematical, it’s scientific. It’s academic in the sense that it has all the academics built into one.”

Choir is known for having its own share of competitions, such as Solo and Ensemble, a public occasion where the person sings a song to a judge and gets a rating of 1-5. There are also All-State and Region competitions, similar to Solo and Ensemble, but a lot more serious in that the contestants sing harder songs.

“It was really exciting.” Jake Hoang, sophomore said. “I got Region and All-State awards. It was a cool experience.”

People who are in choir can also take an abundance amount of other electives. Many students who participate in choir are also taking part in theatre, orchestra and band.

“The singing you would do for theatre is a lot different than choir.” Ian Lawson, a freshman and choir member. “When singing in choir it conflicts with the singing I do for musicals in theatre, but I’m getting better at it.”

The Reedy choir has now performed in two concerts, both of which have achieved amazing responses.

“We’ve gotten positive feedback,” Mrs. Franklin said. “mostly from concerts and having three All-Staters.”

Even though Reedy has only been around for barely a year, choir has a lot of plans for the upcoming future. The students cannot wait for them.

“We are adding a mix choir next year, as well as a show choir.” Mrs. Franklin said. “Hopefully we’ll get to add more choirs as we go and grow in number.”

Music has been around for a long time, and bringing it out to the world creates a feeling of hope and friendship. And that is what choir does.

“Choir’s like a big family,” Jake Hoang said. “We all get together and spend time together.”
