OPENDen Team Roars at District

Students in the Reedy High School OPENDen broadcast and newspaper programs competed at the second annual “Frisco First – Get Local” Broadcast Competition January 24-25 at the FISD CTE Center. OPENDen teams brought home four top-three finishes among the various events.

First place in the general broadcast sports news package category went to the RHS team comprised of senior Cole Johnson, senior Alli Greenberg, and junior Ashley Yarbrough for “Finding the Balance Between Athletics and the Classroom.” The team was provided with pre-recorded content, conducted on-site interviews, and edited the package during the competition while working under deadline.

Greenberg and her teammate, senior Skyler Sacks, won second place in the general sports feature package category for “Zion Washington returns to Frisco for Football, Friends & Family.” In this category, schools submitted a package that had been previously produced for their school newscast.

Seniors Liza Romo and Priyal Talwar won third place for their general broadcast news package “Construction, Expansion at FISD CTE Center.” All footage, interviews and editing were done on-site as part of the competition, while working under deadline.

“I have never participated in a broadcast nor news-related competition prior to this,” junior Hannah Varghese said. “So I was very fortunate to be able to represent Reedy high School at a district level, and come back with hardware.”

Varghese placed third in the video package editing category. Provided with pre-recorded materials, Varghese had to edit together a high-quality and coherent news package under deadline.

Broadcast students now look forward to submitting their entries to the Texas Interscholastic League Press Conference, as well as bringing quality content to the Reedy attendance zone community via this website and social media.
